The Mets won 7-2 because I ate this burger, I’m convinced of it.
I used to order Blue Collar takeout all the time but specifically for their chicken fingers which are among the best I’ve had in this little life, outside of a Long Island diner of course. But when my friend Kit, a new Brooklynite, said that this was the best burger they’ve had here so far, I carved out some time to swing by the Greenpoint outpost.
Their single smash burger is served with green leaf lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions and special sauce on golden potato buns. The only complaint Kit had following their burger is that the single patty is smashed so thin that all the fresh toppings plus the cheese overwhelmed the meat. I was curious if I’d feel the same sans dairy!
I got my burger, alongside an order of onion rings (my favorite in the city other than Pete’s Tavern, IMO) and dove in. While I could see the potential for topping overload with cheese, I think the single is a great fresh bite.
Aside from the smashed patty, the makeup and flavor profile is honestly reminiscent of In-n-Out - bright, just salty enough, crushable. Dipping it in the onion ring’s Boom Boom sauce (the Costco Guys™ have forever changed the mouthfeel of that word) adds some richness and tang if that piques your interest, too.
An affordable quick bite that doesn’t knock you out alongside a great Twitter account that may or may not be affiliated with the small chain - what’s not to love!
This is the first of two burgers I ate right before a Mets win, and for that I’ll always be blessed. It’s also the start of an ongoing streak of Not Disappointing Burgers, including an out-of-towner!
As for a ranking, I’m popping Blue Collar at number 8 - below Diner but edging out Rippers.
Used to live on Driggs and Metropolitan - this was highest quality / most affordable delivery in a 10 block radius.
It hurt to read about the Mets winning but I’ll like it anyway
